Fall is the time of year we see many Michigan birds beginning their annual migratory event. Some of these birds fly over Clague Middle School on their journey to their cozy winter homes. This cool satellite photograph was taken by Google Earth and shows the aerial view of our school and schoolyard. (Be sure and click on the photo to enlarge it.) Can you spot the baseball field, tennis courts, circle drive, and parking lot? Why not try Google Earth for yourself and see if you can see your home the way the birds do?
Visitor fascinates everyone

We had a pretty amazing visitor at Clague yesterday. She was first spotted behind the building and soon everyone was hanging out of the first and second story windows looking at her in awe. Who was she? Well, her scientific name is Chelydra serpentina . You may know her as the common snapping turtle.
Thanks to Ms. Campbell, one of our life science teachers, we were able to learn quite a bit about snapping turtles right on the spot. For instance, judging by her size, she is between 40 or 50 years old! For more information, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources lists some fast facts about the common snapping turtle. Their article Michigan’s Turtles is terrific! Do not miss it!
Our visitng serpentina walked for about 40 seconds at a time before resting in our long, cool grass. She did not seem to mind getting her photo taken and, if you look closely at her “glamour shot”, she seems to be smiling. However, she hissed when we got too close. Luckily, Ms. Campbell was there to warn us about a snapping turtle’s ability to chop one of our fingers off. We kept our distance. P.S. Later in the day, Mr. Hoeflinger, Ms. Badel and Mr. Zera actually saw her in the building as she tried to use the back stairwell as a short cut to Thurston Pond. Who left the doors open??

Back to School for Teachers
September 2nd, 2009 · Comments Off · Uncategorized
On Monday, Clague teachers were readying classrooms, reconnecting with each other, and making plans for the upcoming school year. On Tuesday and Wednesday, all staff returned to school for two full days of professional development. Although many topics were covered, the staff seemed most excited about the concept of teaming. After listening to Mrs. Leaman’s detailed explanation of how to make teams function best, staff were assigned to a team. Teams promptly chose a catchy team name and meaningful motto. The new teams will work together all year long to find ways to improve student achievement. Not all of the day was spent on such serious matters, though. Who would have thought the newly formed teams could make up such amazingly creative new lyrics for familiar tunes and then perform them in front of everyone? The only rule was the song had to have something to do with the team’s name and motto. A few teachers really enjoyed this activity. Look closely, can you tell who they were?
